Paseo El Prado

Strolling along Havana´s Streets

Cuba - January 2008

CHAPTER III

Havana - Paseo El Prado
Havana - Paseo El Prado
At 8:00 a.m. sharp, , I crossed the street to have my breakfast at “Paladar Enrique”. He and his wife were still sleeping. I didn´t find many punctual people in Cuba. Hopefully only 2 taxi men. The one who waited for me at the airport when I came , and the one who took me back to the airport, when I was leaving Havana.

After waiting 10 minutes knocking at the door, Maritza; Enrique´s wife appeared. My breakfast was great, exquisite, abondant: 2 cups of cuban coffe, 2 scrambled eggs, plenty of bread, cheese, mango juice, fruit salad...Better than at home!!! That morning I went with Martha from Calle Consulado N*16-Apt.2, her house, very close to the Malecón. The Malecón is a 8Km long wall, built during USA administration in 1901.

We went strolling by “Paseo de Marti”, called by cubans El Paseo del Prado”. What I´ve seen there, was awful, impressive..., I had tears in my eyes. Ruins of marvellous palaces covered by black fungus, falling down, along this Paseo. Many buildings tumbling down, with people living inside. Looked very depressive.

Cuba - El Capitolio
Cuba - El Capitolio
Ruin...what seems impossible to stop...,abandon ...of those nice architecture buildings, many times copies of european ones. Their old owners, may be very rich people, with huge fortunes, last century or perhaps long ago. Looking these ruined aerea, I´ve remembered Cholon Market, in Ho Chi Min city (ex-Saigon), that we have visited with Stan, my friend, during year 2000.

With those....French colonial buildings, also covered by black fungus, falling down, and also showing that poor people living inside them. Ruin....painful ruin,...the ruin with no hope,... abandon,... dirtiness,...rats,... cockroaches For me there is an enigma: how Cuban Goverment do, even they have very dirty aereas in Havana, for not having rats nor cockroaches ? Very interesting !... An example to many Asiatic towns.
